Pilates is a method of total body conditioning that emphasizes proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, and proper breathing while increasing flexibility, strength, muscle tone, body awareness, energy and mental concentration.
It consists of a series of controlled exercises that are performed on either the spring-resistant apparatus of the Reformer, the Cadillac or the Wunda Chair, the status apparatus of the Spine Corrector, the Ladder Barrel or the Arc Barrels or on the floor, the Mat work.
Pilates is an anaerobic activity that works both the concentric (shortening) and eccentric (lengthening) contractions of the muscles resulting in the long, lean muscles of a dancer as opposed to the shorter, stockier muscles of a weight lifter.
